First: rule out the two bugs that were already fixed
Before you retrace your steps, check the version. Progression problems in this game have a shelf life, because Remedy has been patching blockers out continuously:
- 1.4 (1 October) — quest-progression and map-marker fixes, better signposting toward The Oldest House rooftop, and region tweaks specifically to stop players clipping out of bounds or breaking main-story progress.
- 1.4.1 (2 October) — the Park Resonant quest now lets you interact with the mould normally, and Rush is no longer cancelled while using Elevate.
If your stuck point is "the mould in the Park quest will not take an interaction", that is literally the 1.4.1 fix. Update before doing anything else. If your stuck point is "Rush keeps cancelling in the air", same answer.
The 1.4.0 mould softlock, and why it still matters
This one is worth its own heading because people hit it while mid-quest, which is the worst time to break a progression step. Patch 1.4.0 landed on 1 October and immediately produced reports that the Park Resonant quest became unfinishable: the required step is eating mould strains, and after the update the mould could not be interacted with. One player described having exactly one strain left and being unable to touch it.
1.4.1 fixed exactly this, described in the patch note as fixing an issue where players were unable to progress The Park Resonant quest because eating the mould became impossible.
The practical consequence: if you are on 1.4.0 and stuck on that quest, you did not miss anything, and reloading will not help. Update the game. If you already saved over the moment and cannot get the last interaction to register, the pre-1.4.1 save is the fallback rather than a workaround.
The three parallel chains
The core of the confusion is that Control Resonant does not run one main storyline. It runs three chains concurrently. G2A's guide names Contain the Crisis and Search for Jesse as the two you should check when the story seems frozen; a third chain exists alongside them.
⚠️ Unverified: we could not confirm the third chain's exact English title against the live build. It shows as unconfirmed on this page rather than as a guess. We will name it once checked.
Practical version: when the marker goes quiet, open the journal and read the status of all chains instead of staring at the one you were following. In a semi-open map the next objective is very often in a region you have already unlocked but not finished clearing.
Region order and what actually gates each Resonant
The order below is community-reported rather than official, and it matches how the gating tasks chain. Treat it as a route that avoids walking into locked doors, not as a requirement.
| Order | Region | Resonant | Gate you must clear first |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Downtown (prologue) | The Artist | None, it is the opening boss |
| 2 | Central Zone | The Deserter | Destroy three Hot Tumours inside the Pattern Factory — this opens the furnace room door |
| 3 | West Incursion Zone | The Dancer | Finish the zone's rift task to unlock Shift, then enter the Pattern Theatre |
| 4 | Park | The Collective | Consume the mould strains at three sites: the convenience store, the pizza shop and the gym, which opens the central mould door |
| 5 | Underpass | The Physicist | Spire plus Spiritworld: locate three Astral Keys to unlock the door, then the silhouette-guided puzzle |
| 6 | Unknown Zone | Co-Director | Help the Rangers, disrupt Patterns, clear the ambushes. Killing it unlocks Command and opens the final Hedron fight |
The three most common "the game is broken" reports map to rows 2, 4 and 5: a furnace door that will not open because a Hot Tumour was missed, a central mould door that will not open because one of three specific strains was not eaten, and an Underpass door that needs keys from a different zone entirely.
The silhouette puzzle, since it stops people
In the Underpass the glowing silhouette follows Dylan as you move. The failure mode is moving too fast and losing it. Turn around periodically to confirm it is still with you, and after each corner stop and wait for it to catch up. Use Shift to reshape the terrain and open the route forward.
If it is still blocked
Give us three things and it becomes diagnosable: the quest name from the journal, the region you are standing in, and whether you used a fast-travel door immediately before it broke. One 1.4 fix covered a fast-travel door in the Evacuation Zone showing the wrong region name after moving to the Central Zone, which is the kind of thing that makes a quest look dead when it is actually just mislabeled.
Also worth knowing: the day-one hotfix permanently lowered the cost of respecing and increased every merchant's stock of respec items, and 1.4 added a Build Power readout in the bottom-left of the loadout screen plus merchant icons that tell you whether that merchant sells a material you have pinned. Both are aimed at exactly the "I do not know what to do next" problem — if you are under-levelled for a region, the UI now tells you in a way it did not at launch.
People also ask
- Why does Control Resonant feel like the story just stops?
- Three main quest chains run simultaneously rather than one after another. When the chain you followed to its end stops, the next objective is usually sitting in a different chain, in a region you already walked past.
- Is there a recommended region order?
- The order most players report as least-friction is Downtown, then Central Zone, West Incursion Zone, Park, the Underpass, and finally the Unknown Zone for the endgame. It is not a hard requirement, but several Resonants gate behind region-specific unlock tasks, so a wandering order means hitting locked doors repeatedly.
- I cannot interact with the mould in the Park quest even though I found it.
- Update the game. That interaction was broken and Remedy fixed it in the 1.4.1 hotfix, so if you are on 1.4.0 or earlier the mould can be un-interactable.
- Does the game mark objectives on the map?
- Patch 1.4 included map-marker and quest-progression fixes, and improved the signposting on the route to The Oldest House rooftop. So if you are lost on that specific route and you have not updated, updating is the first fix rather than the last.
