Starfield Free Lanes — the biggest free update explained, including PS5 launch and free-flight

Free Lanes launched 7 April 2026 alongside Starfield's PS5 debut. It adds free-flight between planets, new locations, side quests and a collectible figure system. Here is what changed.

Checked in-game on patch 1.16.244

Free-flight — the headline feature

The Free Lanes update introduces free-flight between planets within the same star system. Previously, travelling to a different planet required using the fast-travel system, which broke immersion with a loading screen. Now you can pilot your ship directly to nearby planets in a seamless transition.

This applies only to intra-system travel. Jumping between star systems still uses the existing grav drive mechanic.

PS5 launch

Starfield launched on PlayStation 5 on 7 April 2026, the same day as the Free Lanes update. This marks the end of Starfield's Xbox/PC exclusivity and brings the game to a significantly larger console audience.

Additional content

Beyond free-flight, the Free Lanes update adds:

  • New locations to explore across multiple star systems
  • New side quests expanding the game's narrative content
  • Gameplay system improvements addressing quality-of-life feedback from the community
  • Colony Wars collectible figures — a new collection system for in-game memorabilia

Stability (Update 1.16.244)

The June 2026 follow-up patch addressed multiple stability issues and gameplay/UI bugs reported after the Free Lanes launch. Players on earlier versions should update for the most stable experience.
