The Blood of Dawnwalker has no respec — how to spend 3 shared skill points across three trees

Each of the three trees wants 39 points for its ultimate and the pool does not stretch that far. What the day-one hotfix changed about resetting, and which tree bridges day and night.

The constraint in one paragraph

You have three trees — Witchcraft, Swordmastery, Vampirism — pulling from one shared skill point pool. Each tree holds exactly one ultimate perk, each ultimate costs 39 points (35 within the tree plus 4 for the node), and the pool does not reach three ultimates in one run. There is no respec to lean on. So "which tree do I dump into" is not a style preference, it is a permanent fork, and it is the single most-asked question about this game.

What the trees actually cost you

TreeContentsWhen you can use itHard requirement
Witchcraft31 nodes: 21 passives, 10 activesDay only, human formSeveral spells cost health and charges, so casting is a literal blood price
Swordmastery22 talents, 7 skillsAlwaysNone — this is the constant
VampirismActives plus the Corruption systemNight only, when the Vrakhiri curse is onThe Vampirism ultimate additionally needs Corruption 15, not just 39 points

That night/day split is the real design constraint and it is why a pure mage run hurts: the moment the sun sets, your tree is switched off. Creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz is explicit that a witchcraft build still has to parry, because charges for the spells are accumulated through melee combat.

The shape that works for a first run

Swordmastery spine, one other tree layered on. Swordmastery functions in every phase, so it is the floor rather than a commitment.

From the tree contents, the pieces worth prioritising:

  • Perfect-parry passives. A perfect parry guarantees a critical hit and feeds charge generation. Everything else in the game leans on this.
  • Charge — a burst-damage rush that stuns everyone along the path. Cheap, always available, no phase dependency.
  • Ravenous Flock (Witchcraft) — 45s cooldown, area damage plus stun, 20s duration, but it costs two charges and 40% of your health. Pair it with Unholy Vitality, which restores health after using an active ability, heals for 40% of critical damage dealt to Witchcraft-affected targets, and removes the health cost entirely below 30% HP. That pairing is what makes a spell build survivable.
  • Crimson Rush (Vampirism) — active ability damage scaling with your health percentage, so it rewards playing healthy rather than desperate.
  • Blood Surge (Vampirism) — makes non-boss enemies explode. Very strong, very expensive in charges and health, and it gates behind an unlock you may not reach on a first run.

The thing nobody warns you about

Corruption is not just a build resource, it is a story variable. Drinking animal blood versus human blood changes how fast Corruption fills and what buffs you get, and it is framed deliberately as a moral choice. If you ignore hunger, Coen can lose control and kill a key NPC, which bends the narrative.

So a Vampirism build is not only a point investment — it is a commitment to managing a hunger system for 30 in-game days, on pain of altering your own story. If you want the Vampirism ultimate, you need Corruption 15, which means you need to eat steadily, which means you need to accept the consequences of how you eat.

How to see all three ultimates without three runs

The route documentation for the achievement side of this game is straightforward: manual-save before the commit. Dump the pool into one tree's ultimate, take it, then load that save and spend it into a different tree. The achievement tracker does not punish this.

This matters most for three trophies which are flagged as missable on a single save precisely because of point scarcity: the Swordmastery ultimate, the Witchcraft ultimate, and the Vampirism ultimate.

Unconfirmed on this page

⚠️ Whether "no respec" is literally true on the current patch, rather than a persistent community assumption. The claim appears in build guides and matches the fact that no reset mechanic is documented. We are testing it directly and will update this section with a yes or a no rather than leaving it as reported consensus.

People also ask

Can I respec in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
The consistent community answer is no — the game does not offer a clean respec, which is why build anxiety is so high around it. What we have not pinned down is whether anything in the day-one balance window changed the reset behaviour, so the safe assumption is that your points are permanent. Treat every allocation as final until a page here says otherwise.
Can I get all three ultimate perks in one save?
Reported as no. Each ultimate perk costs 39 points — 35 inside that tree plus 4 for the node itself — and the shared pool across the three trees does not reach three ultimates in a single playthrough. The workaround is a manual save before committing, then loading and spending the pool differently.
Which tree should I stay in?
Swordmastery, whatever else you do. It is the only tree that works in both day and night, so it is the floor under any build rather than a direction you commit to. Community consensus for a first run is a swordmastery spine with one other tree layered on top.
Is there anything like a respec at all?
On PC there are mods that remove the restriction on how many active abilities you can equip per tree, and add a second ability page. That is a mod, not a feature, it needs UE4SS, and we have not tested whether it affects trophy eligibility.
